transform learning

about

Due to cumulative learning loss, students in secondary education in India's government schools are unable to access and grasp grade-level content, often leading to disengagement and eventual dropout.

Transform Learning supports state governments to use targeted instruction to bridge learning gaps in foundational and pre-requisite competencies; enabling students to better access grade-level content.

The 200+ hour programme is delivered during school hours by trained government teachers. In collaboration with State functionaries, teachers and students, we identify foundation and pre-requisite competencies that need support and leverage State Resources Groups to create relevant material consolidated into a Student Handbook and Teacher Handbook.

Through a cascade model, teachers are trained to use the handbooks and to use competency-based targeted instruction including mastery learning, experiential and peer learning approaches to improve learning.

Competency-based assessments across the year and robust quality assurance processes co-led by our team and the State functionaries ensures quality implementation, and enables timely and evidence-based decision making.

An RCT by J-PAL South Asia in 2019-20 found that within just 50 hours of instruction per subject, Transform Learning resulted in 0.4-1.5 years of additional learning for participating students. Students across terciles saw gains, and learning gains were also seen beyond official curriculum i.e. students perform better in PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) type questions as well.
